Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant | Is it Worth the Hype?

From the creators of the make-up melting marvel, PreCleanse and one of my fave Charcoal Masks at the moment, comes arguably one of the most anticipated skincare releases this year so far (or maybe just for me?) There is no denying that Dermalogica is one my favourite skincare brands, everything they create just works and every time I see a sneak peak or get wind of new product coming I can't help but feel a little bit school girl excited and let out an internal (possibly also external) squeal. So when I was asked to try their latest twist on one of their Cult Classics thanks to Active Skin, I just couldn't pass up the offer. Dermalogica's new Daily Superfoliant* is skincare game changer, promising to resurface the skin but also fight off premature skin ageing that is caused by pollution. Yes, that lovely thing called pollution.

I know what you're thinking, not only do we need to worry about slip slip slapping everyday to prevent damage caused by the sun but now we must also think about pollution we subject our skin to on the daily - here's to never leaving the house! But I don't know about you guys, but I really don't need something else to stress about (hello, stress head right here), so having a product that takes out most of the work out in protecting in your skin is definitely something you want to have in your arsenal - but is the Dermalogica Superfoliant worth all the hype? Let's get down to the nitty gritty.

Fans of Dermalogica may be familiar with their Daily Microfoliant (it just so happens to be one of my favourite skincare products everrrrr just FYI), which is a super effective powder base scrub that leaves your face glowing and smoother than a baby's bum. Much like its best-selling predecessor, the NEW Daily Superfoliant is like the Daily Microfoliant's hotter older sister. It draws on the same innovative powder based skin exfoliation technique, but works to deeply purify the skin, leaving it feeling and looking ultra smooth and combating those pesky environmental pollution triggers that damage our skin. Unlike Microfoliant, Superfoliant produces a deeper level of exfoliation due to slightly higher pH that works to really open up the pores to absorb pollutants deep within the skin.

But why should we even care about the effect pollution has on our skin, let alone invest in a product to combat this? For one, many studies indicate that there is a link between exposure to air pollution and premature skin ageing that results in hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and dehydrated and weakened skin cells. Pollutants wreak havoc on your skin not only causing all those skin issues I just mentioned but also degrading the quality of your skin that leads to skin ageing - not a pretty picture if you ask me...

Luckily, that's where the Daily Superfoliant comes in. Made up of ingredients such as Activated Binchotan Charcoal Powder, Red Algae, Rice Bran Extract, Niacinamide and Malic and Lactic Acid to absorb pollutants, help to preserve the skin's youthful structure and fight the effects of pollution on the skin.

Sounds pretty darn amazing right? So right! But does the Daily Superfoliant live up to all that it is claimed to be?

The dark grey powder in theory seems hard to use, but in reality it is a pinch. After my double cleanse, I would pour a tiny amount in the palms of my hands (about a 1 teaspoon) and add the smallest amount of water and rub your hands together to create a thick foamy looking paste and slather it in circular motions all over my skin. I use a lot of glycolic acid products so I really make it a rule of thumb to not use too many exfoliating products all at once. I would use this on alternate evenings and instead of using my Pixi Glow Tonic to tone my skin, I would follow up with a facial mist like the Lush Tea Tree Toner in it's place to not irritate my skin.

I am such a fan of the OG Microfoliant because whenever my skin is feeling and looking a just a bit 'blah' I would whip it out, rub it all over my skin and my complexion would be brighter, softer and feel a whole lot less congested and gross. This Superfoliant however does all that and so much more. The powder is so finely milled meaning that it isn't too abrasive or too harsh on the skin, making it gentle but super effective - aka the perfect physical exfoliator. Whats better is that I can seriously feel the powder working deep into my skin to remove whatever pollutants or debris may be lingering about in my skin layers. I also love the feeling of my skin afterwards, it feels refreshed, seriously clean but not in a tight, stripped of moisture sort of way. Over the last few months that I have been trialling this I reach for it when my skin is feeling its absolute worst and I don't have the time or patience for a charcoal face mask.

I can't really vouch for its anti-ageing properties as I feel that may be something to track over a longer period of time. But I can say with confidence that adding this into my weekly routine has made a SUPER difference to my skin, it feels more refined, soft, glowing and decongested - basically all that good stuff you want for your skin! The Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant is 100% worth the hype and more, and definitely a product you should look at to add into your regime.

The Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant is currently available on ActiveSkin for $63.00, which I believe is a saving of about $22 off the RRP that is normally about $85. You can also find the rest of the Dermalogica range on ActiveSkin as well!
