Kylie Lip Kit and Glosses | My Experience, First Impressions & Swatches

I have a (not so secret) confession to make. I have a complete and utter obsession with the Kardashian/Jenner clan. My camera roll and Pinterest boards are overflowing with their slayin' outfits and make-up looks, I may skip your snapchat story but I will never skip theirs, I love Nori/Penelope/Mason/Reign like they were my own children, my friends know exactly who I am talking about when I refer to any of them by first name in a conversation (because who else would I be talking about...) and you better believe that I did download Kimoji pretty much as soon as it was released - my obsession quite literally knows no bounds.

Now I know what you're thinking - why, why, WHY? And that my friends is a question I can't even answer myself. It is an obsession a few years in the making and I am not ashamed, not even one bit. So naturally as soon as I heard that King Kylie herself was releasing her own line of lipsticks I couldn't contain myself, I had to have them in my life one way or another. It was like all my prayers had finally been answered, my two long time loves were coming together and better yet I could FINALLY achieve that infamous KJ pout.*

For months I waited to get my very own Lip Kits. But y'all know the deal, they are almost impossible to get your hands on. So it seemed I would never own one after all (*insert sobs here*). Until one day a fellow obsessed friend and I decided that it was time we finally took action. We found out when the next re-stock date was and we quite literally prepared for battle.

And when I say preparing for battle, I am being totally and completely serious. For us Aussies, the re-stock time is approx 6am (if you live in Sydney). For me it that wasn't too much of stretch as I wake up at 6:30 for work anyway but yes, I did wake up 5:45 just to be ready in time and get mah game face on. As soon as it hit 6am I was on the site and ready to rumble. I literally swooped on in and added everything I wanted to my cart and hit check out in a matter of seconds - I wasn't playin' y'all. I have heard some horror stories about people being told the Lip Kit they choose was out of stock as they went to pay or that others had to wait as much as half an hour just to get in line to pay but for me, I was entering my card details within 5 minutes - thank goodness! And when I received that confirmation email I wanted to get up and do a happy dance around my room but seeing as it was 6am it was still a tad too early for that.

In the end I was able to get Candy K, Dolce K, Koko K Lip Kits and the Literally gloss for both myself and my friend. Now, if you have yet to score a Lip Kit (and actually want to) my best advice is to be ready at least 10 minutes before the re-stock time, know exactly what you want and make sure you have already set up an account - and maybe also a few sweat bands and a bottle of water handy, because my stress levels were seriously peaking...

But my stress didn't end there, oh no. I am sure we have all heard the other horror stories told again and again about some people never receiving their order, to others getting an empty box or the wrong shades of lipsticks. I didn't receive my email that the order had been sent at least a good week after the order and didn't receive the actual package for at least another week. In hindsight the wait wasn't terribly long, but damn it really felt like I waited for months.

Now on to the package and the Lip Kits themselves. Thankfully my box was full and not empty and nothing had obviously spilled inside. First impression? Not going to lie, I was obviously very impressed. My order came in the standard packaging and appeared to be correct. However, it wasn't until I was exchanging the Lip Kits with my friend that we realised that we had received the wrong gloss. I had originally ordered 2 Literally glosses but instead we got one Literally and one Like. Obviously I was now disappointed that our order wasn't correct - damn you Kylie! I decided to keep Like (the darker of the two) and to be honest I didn't expect them to replace it (considering everything else I had heard) so I tried not to be too upset about it all.

From Left to Right: Koko K, Candy K, Dolce K and Like Gloss

Out of the colours I now have I would say Koko K is easily my favourite. It is a pinky slightly brownish nude and very Kylie Jenner-esque. However, being as pale as I am (see my hand above haha) it turns out that the Lip Kits ended up being a lot darker on me than I thought they would be from previous swatches I have seen (#palegirllife). I imagined Koko to be a lot lighter and Candy to be shade like Koko and so on. Despite that Candy K I would say is very similar in shade to Kat Von D Lolita II but slightly more pink and Dolce K a lot more brown in tone than pink - something I don't really have in my collection.

However that aside, the first thing I noticed about the Lip Kits was the scent. After what I heard I imagined them to be quite similar to a MAC Lipstick kinda smell, but these are much x1000 more stronger and dare I say a bit sickening. At first I wasn't bothered by it but now after using them a few more times I don't like the scent at all. If you are sensitive to scents and fragrances I would recommend you steer clear of these as they are quite strong when applying but seems disappear after they have dried.

That being said, these suckers have to be one of the best Liquid Lipsticks I have tried longevity wise. I would slot these between the Kat Von D liquid lipsticks and the Anastasia Beverley Hills liquid lipsticks, not as long lasting and comfortable as Kat Von D but definitely a lot better than ABH. I wore Koko on a night out a few weeks ago and I have to say I was quite impressed. It lasted several hours, food and numerous drinks and was still on by the end of the night - thumbs up from me. They are also quite comfortable as long as you exfoliate and moisturise your lips properly (you all know the drill by now).

As for the gloss it is quite standard nothing special, if anything a little bit sticky and annoying to apply. This colour in particular I find looks quite lovely applied on top of Dolce K as they are very similar in shade. I am not fan of the brush however, and would actually prefer it to be a doe foot applicator like the lip Kits. I have used the gloss a few times and my brush is starting to fray. Not as bad as Jeffree Star's but it could get that way if I am not careful. The gloss also has the same sickly vanilla scent.

The formula of the lipsticks is quite creamy and fairly easy to apply. I don't find the lip pencils necessary for nude lipsticks but they are a nice touch and really lovely on their own as well. However I found that my Koko lipstick is slightly runnier than the others. I was actually holding the tube on an angle while applying and it started to drip out on to my vanity - thumbs from me. These dry very quickly but don't feel dry on the lips. You can feel them but it is not uncomfortable.

But are these worth the hype? I hate to say it but no I don't think they are. When you factor in the price (in Australia these roughly cost $40) plus the $15 shipping, I would rather spend that on a Kat Von D or ABH Lipstick. And now after reading this article about them being very similar to Colour Pop liquid lipsticks formula, I would much rather purchase those instead. With these you are quite literally paying for the Kylie Jenner name. But when it comes down to it I don't think the quality and hassle of  getting these products are worth the price at all. I understand that every company or person makes mistakes but I feel Kylie and her company should be making more of an effort. Will I buy more from Kylie Cosmetics? At the moment no, but I have heard whispers about brow and eye products coming soon so we shall have to wait and see if I can resist that hype...

Have you tried any of the Kylie Lip Kits or Lip Glosses? What are your thoughts?

  1. A bit of a shame they haven't lived up to the hype but I actually thought that this would be the case. People are just hoping and really like you said purchasing and paying for the Kylie Jenner name. It will be interesting what her other products will be like. Great review.

  2. I think unless you're a massive massive Kardashians fan it's not really worth the trouble to get these, everyone is always talking about how the shades they want are constantly sold out!

Also, massive props to you for waking up at 5.45am to get these. That's serious dedication.

  4. I would looove to own these shades, but since I'm not a Kardashian fan I don't think it's that worth it, there are some other liquid lipsticks that do the job with less trouble haha But I'm glad you got your hands on them since you are a fan!! 1. I see what you mean, they are great shades but there are definitely brands out there that have just as nice shades for a lot less drama! Thanks for stopping by Brenda! x

  5. $40 is A LOT!! I want to get Koko K, Candy K, and Posie K, but never bother because like you said, I always hear it's a battle on her website whenever she relaunches. Plus, in America shipping is $8 and even that is a lot for me lol! I feel like she should offer free shipping once you spend a minimum amount. I'm glad that the formula is good though!

    1. Ugh I know, definitely one of the pricer lipsticks I have bought - and everything is already inflated in Australia! I also like the look on Posie K but not too sure if I want to go through that whole ordeal again!! Wow they should definitely do free shipping in the US at least, and seeing as we all spend a lot on the products there should a minimum for free shipping, you're right! x

  6. As much as these are so gorgeous, and I love King Kylie, I really just can't justify the price, especially since the formula change and similarities to Colour Pop. I will say that bish knows her shit and good on her for actually creating something she is proud of and being a business woman, instead of lying back and not being involved in her work. Great post!

  10. Haha I was not aware of your Kardashian obsession! I do admit, I follow them all on snapchat and if I'm at a hotel or something (or on the plane) where they have E! I find myself watching KUWTK...it's just so addictive! Interesting to hear your thoughts though. Overall these do seem like great formulas but not something I will shell out for! It's interesting seeing paler people wear them because they look so much darker than they do on Kylie!

    1. It is very very addictive, I know! haha! They overall really nice liquid lipsticks but perhaps not nice enough for that price point! Oh I know right? I was quite shocked hoe much darker it was on me but I guess I should have expected that! xx
